NF3: UV absorption spectrum temperature dependence and the atmospheric and climate forcing implications
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) is an atmospherically persistent greenhouse gas that is primarily removed by UV photolysis and reaction with O(D) atoms. In this work, the NF3 gas-phase UV absorption spectrum, s(l,T), was measured at 16 wavelengths between 184.95 and 250 nm at temperatures between 212 and 296K. A significant spectrum temperature dependence was observed in the wavelength region most relevant to atmospheric photolysis (200–220 nm) with a decrease in s(210 nm,T) of ~45% between 296 and 212K. Atmospheric photolysis rates and global annually averaged lifetimes of NF3 were calculated using the Goddard Space Flight Center 2-D model and the s(l,T) parameterization developed in this work. Including the UV absorption spectrum temperature dependence increased the stratospheric photolysis lifetime from 610 to 762 years and the total global lifetime from 484 to 585 years; the NF3 global warming potentials on the 20-, 100-, and 500-year time horizons increased <0.3, 1.1, and 6.5% to 13,300, 17,700, and 19,700, respectively. Impacts of brown carbon from biomass burning on surface UV and ozone photochemistry in the Amazon Basin
The spectral dependence of light absorption by atmospheric particulate matter has major implications for air quality and climate forcing, but remains uncertain especially in tropical areas with extensive biomass burning. In the September-October 2007 biomass-burning season in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, we studied light absorbing (chromophoric) organic or "brown" carbon (BrC) with surface and space-ba...

Various concentrations of copper were embedded into silica matrix to xerogel forms using copper source Cu(NO3)2∙3H2O. The xerogel samples were prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of Tetraethyl Ortho-Silicate (TEOS) with determination of new molar ratio of the components by the sol-gel method. After ambient drying, the xerogel samples were heated from 60 to 1000˚C at a slow heating rate (50°...
متن کاملAtmospheric dynamics feedback: concept, simulations and climate
The regional climate response to radiative forcing is largely controlled by changes in the atmospheric circulation. It has also been suggested that global climate sensitivity depends on the circulation response, an effect we call the “atmospheric dynamics feedback”. Using a technique to isolate the effect of changes in atmospheric circulation on top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation, we calculate t...
متن کاملThe effect of temperature on optical absorption cross section of bimetallic core-shell nano particles
In this paper, the temperature dependence on optical absorption cross section of the core shell bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) is investigated in quasi static approximation. Temperature dependence of the plasmon resonance is important issue because of recent applications of NPs of noble metal for heat treating of cancer and the computer chips. The effect of temperature on surface plasmon resona...
متن کاملThe Importance of Atmospheric Dynamics in the Northern Hemisphere Wintertime Climate Response to Changes in the Earth’s Orbit
Milankovitch proposed that variations in the earth’s orbit cause climate variability through a local thermodynamic response to changes in insolation. This hypothesis is tested by examining variability in an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to an ocean mixed layer model subjected to the orbital forcing of the past 165 000 yr. During Northern Hemisphere summer, the model’s response c...
